Amazon’s e-reader, the Kindle, is seeing its 3rd generation announced today. Amazon is not only lowering the price they are introducing a WiFi-only Kindle Wireless Reading Device available for pre-order now at $139.00. They are also releasing a 3rd generation device with 3G and WiFi for $189.
I’ve been toying around with the idea of getting a Kindle for a while but the cost has held me back. Additionally, while the concept of being able to download a new book anywhere and anytime sounds great on paper (if you’ll pardon the pun) it’s just not something I’d see myself doing much. On the other hand, being able to download the book via my home wireless network would more than handle most of my needs. Being able to get a Kindle that doesn’t carry the 3G gear or service sounds like it would be just fine. As an added bonus, however, the WiFi Kindle will be able to connect to any AT&T hotspot, which basically means just about any Starbucks shop out there. In the business section of northwest DC, it’s almost impossible to get out of the range of a Starbucks so getting a new book is just a matter of stopping in for a latte.
