Bush to lift exec order banning offshore drilling, Dems continue to twiddle their thumbs
President Bush will lift the executive order banning offshore oil drilling today, removing one of the two things keeping us from developing our domestic energy resources.
White House press secretary Dana Perino says Bush is acting now in hopes of spurring Congress to act. So far, lawmakers have shown no interest in doing so.
Bush and a growing number of lawmakers have been calling for broader options in dealing with rising energy costs, including $4 per gallon gasoline.
The Outer Continental Shelf has been a particularly hot debate, with the Bush administration saying new drilling technology would make U.S. shores safe from environmental disaster while helping to drive down prices with greater supplies.
As has been said a number of times around the blogosphere, we have a particular energy infrastructure that’s been built over the last century. Like it or not, that’s the infrastructure we have. Only by using that infrastructure to provide the necessary energy for our research and continued production can we build an infrastructure that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels. Trying to do otherwise will bankrupt us at the very least. We should be developing every single domestic energy source we can and there’s absolutely nothing keeping us to pursuing those cleaner sources while we use what we have. Nothing, that is, except the Democrat-led Congress. They promised us leadership and energy independence. What we’ve got so far is gas over 100% more costly than it was before they took charge and a lot of twiddling thumbs. Which is a fine segue into this latest ad from Freedom Watch that I heard about in my e-mail today:
Sounds about right. Remember, folks, elections have consequences. If you’d like to see Congress actually doing something about our energy situation, you might remember their actions so far when you enter the polls in November.
