Human Events endorses Fred Thompson for GOP nominee in the 2008 Presidential race

This is widely reported but I wanted to make note of it here. Human Events™ has endorsed Fred Thompson for the GOP nominee in this year’s presidential elections:

We begin by recalling the profound words of Ronald Reagan at the Conservative Political Action Conference Feb. 15, 1975: “A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency or simply to swell its numbers.” We believed that then, and we believe it now. The issue for us — and for the conservative community — boils down to which of the candidates is most representative of the fundamental conservative principles we believe in. The answer is Fred Thompson.

I’ve long been a proponent of the “big tent” idea in politics and another of Reagan’s maxims, which goes along the lines of people that agree with you on 80% of your issues shouldn’t be tossed aside for the 20% that they don’t. However, as Hugh Hewitt has written, the tent – regardless of how big it may be – must have walls. The actions and stances that some of the current candidates for the nominee have taken and hold are, I would argue, so inimical to the concept of conservative government that they cannot be reasonably said to represent most of the party’s positions. While no one is perfect and no candidate can claim to be, either, there comes a time when the members of a party must look at the candidates with a discerning eye and figure out which one most closely represents most of the party’s stances.

Human Events™ has it correctly: Fred Thompson is best representative of what we say our stances are on the issues we all say are important to us. Distractions tossed into the air like the complaints about when Fred entered the race are red herrings thrown at us in an effort to make us forget what the important factors of our decision are. Fred can win this and Fred’s got our best interests in mind. He deserves our support.
